Im calling myself out. My BIG Blunder

12 April 2017 Leave a Comment

Yesterday in tap company Mrs Brooke and I had a discussion with the dancers about the studio now being a cell phone free zone. We talked about how when they have their break they need to either be practicing in the studio or outside stretching and rolling around on the lawn (we should be so grateful we have access to this out door area!).

We feel that by pulling out devices on break time disconnects them from their bodies, what they have been working on, and limits connection with fellow dancers. We want to create space where they connect to each other and strengthen their relationships with each other and their dancing.

This is where my big blunder comes in. Not more than 20 seconds after the announcement, I was on my phone emailing a parent. Sofia called out, “cell phone free space!” I then proceed to explain I was emailing parents, I needed to do it before I forgot, and would be taking photos and videos of them.

Basically, excusing my behavior.

This is where I am calling myself out and apologizing. I should have excused myself and gone outside. I should have taken the opportunity to set an example instead of giving reasons and excuses.

When I got in my car and had this realization, I should have turned around and walked right back in the studio to admit my error.I want to apologize to each of the dancers and to you the parents for me not taking action the way the way that I had put onto the dancers.

This year is about raising my standards, and here was a lesson on how I could have done that in being an example. I shouldn’t have a different set of rules because I am the adult or the owner. I need to create a space for connection as well. That is one of the main reason I started this dance studio, was create a safe place for people of all ages and passions to connect and create magic together in what ever lights them up.

I would like to encourage us all to put down our devices and leave room for the opportunity to connect.

Thank you for reading and please pass on to your dancers.

I am so grateful for the opportunity to be surrounded by all of your talented children. We would not be here if it was not for them and for your support in their dreams and talents. Thank you.
